Mariner's Caravan

This is short notice but today at 3:30pm the Mariner's Caravan will be stopping at the Ferndale Club. The Mariner Moose, Mike Carp, Mike Saunders, and Rick Rizzs will all be here to meet the kids and sign autographs.

This event is open for Club members and their families.

We're Back

After that LONG week of no Club programs due to weather, the Club is up and running. We missed the kids and we are glad to have them back. Our regular operating hours are 3:30-7p (2:30 opening for teens).

In fact, this Friday (January 27) is our first Family Fun Night of 2012! It will be from 7-8:15. We will serve dinner, play games, and have raffle prizes. Bring the family and have fun.

Inclement Weather Policy

With the snowy weather conditions we have been having, there is a chance the Club may be closed certain days this week. We already are closed Monday, Jan 16 due to the holiday. But, please read the weather statement below to find out about the rest of the week. We will continue to update our website at www.whatcomclubs.org.

INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

IN GENERAL, the Boys & Girls Clubs follow these guidelines and procedures regarding snow policies, and other inclement weather conditions:

1. Decisions are made based primarily upon safety. Is it safe (walking and driving) for children and staff to arrive to the Club or program sites? How do we avoid the unsafe circumstance of being "stranded" at the Club or program sites?

2. If the local school is closed, the local Club is closed. This may vary district to district.

3. If the school closes early, such as at noon, then the local Club is closed.

4. If school is on a delay-- for example, opening two hours late-- then the Club's beforeschool program is also two hours late.

5. Anytime a school is closed, all activities at the school (such as basketball games or practices) are cancelled. Again this may vary district to district. For example, Mt. Baker may be closed, but Bellingham open.

6. For updated information, and on Saturdays (sports), the Branch Directors or Athletic Directors may leave updated messages on their Club's outgoing voice mail.

We hope you all had a great new year and holiday season.

One new year resolution here at the Club is to update this blog more regularly with information, pictures, and other Club happenings more often. Let's shoot for at least twice a month but hopefully more often.

Tonight is Parent's Night Out. Kids can stay until 10pm tonight so parents can have some time to get their to-do lists done. We will not be feeding kids dinner but they will get a snack.

We would also like to remind parents that we are CLOSED Friday November 11 in honor of Veteran's Day. We will reopen for kids Monday November 14 from 3:30-7pm.

Next week from November 16-23, the Ferndale School District has Early Release for conferences. Please sign members up in advance for them to come to the Club early on those days. The cost is $1/day. The Club CLOSES at 5:30 on all Early Release Day and at 5:00 on 11/23.

Halloween Party Friday 10/28

Every month the Ferndale Boys & Girls Club hosts a Family Fun Night for our members and their families. This month, our Family Fun Night will correspond with our Halloween Party! We invite all family members to join us for fun and games!

On October 28, from 7-9:00p, the Club will host a Halloween Party for all Club member’s and their families.

We will be serving mummy dogs, guts, and mini pumpkins for dinner at 7 o'clock. After dinner, we will have a magic show put on by one of our very own Club teens, and then we will play games!

You may come in costume if you wish!

We hope to see you all there!!

Teen Lock- In

Every quarter the Boys & Girls Clubs of Whatcom County hosts a Teen Lock-In with teen members county-wide. This quarter, the Ferndale Club will be the site of the Fall Teen Lock-In.

The Lock-In will be this Saturday, October 15 at 8p. (All teens must be there by midnight.) The cost is $20 for members and $30 for non-members (but they must have a parent drop them off and fill out the necessary contact information). Members grades 7-12 will have fun playing video games and gym games, eating snacks, playing glow in the dark tag, making caramel apples, and staying up all night. All activities will be staff supervised and no member is allowed to leave the Club from 8p-8a (Sunday).

Day for Kids!

On Saturday September 24, all kids (members and non-members) and their families are invited to the Club to play games, make crafts, and have fun! Then, later in the evening we will watch a family movie.

The Club Open House will be from 5:30-7p. The movie (Space Jam) will begin at 7pm. If the weather permits, we will hold the movie outdoors on the side of the building so bring chairs and blankets! We will provide the popcorn.

The Ferndale Boys & Girls Club will be closed from August 25 - September 6. During this time staff will be cleaning and training. We will reopen for kids on September 7 from 3:30-7p.

Since it is the new school year, it means that it is time to renew annual memberships! All children/teens must have new 2011/2012 membership beginning September 7. The Club will be open for parents to sign their child(ren) up on September 6 from 11a-3p.

“Wear”: Ferndale Club Gym

On August 19 (4:30-7p) and 20 (10a-1p), the Ferndale Boys & Girls Club will be hosting a School Clothes/Shoe Trade. This is a chance for kids to give away their gently used school clothes/shoes while getting more clothes for the upcoming school year!

Right now, kids may bring in their gently used clothes and receive “tickets”; one for each item of clothing. Kids will then use those tickets to get new clothes on August 19th. August 20th will be open to the public.

If you have clothes that won’t fit for next school year, bring them in now for your tickets. This will be a fun event!

PARENTS: We are in desperate need of some volunteers to help us with this event. Any time 8/19 4:30-7p or 8/20 10a-1p would be very much appreciated. Please contact the Club to let us know when you can help.

End of the Summer

It is the end of the summer and Club staff must take some time for training and Club cleaning before the school year begins. Because of this the Club will be Closed from August 24 - September 6. We will be open September 6 from 11a-3p to take 2011/2012 memberships.

Summer time is going full swing at the Club and we are having a great time with the kids. There are even still some Field Trips that are not totally full and if you sign up soon, your child could enjoy some great summer activities. Summer Time is Here!

After a long school year, the Ferndale Boys & Girls Club is now open for summer!
We are open 10a-5p Monday-Friday and have daily planned activities for our members.

We are also open for Early Bird from 7a-10a for $55/week, this includes fun games and breakfast.

Some of our fun field trips are not totally full so you can still sign up for some of those if your son/daughter would like to visit some cool places! You can find a list of those Field Trips here.

Teen Dance

On Friday, June 17, the Ferndale Club held our first Teen Dance hosted by a DJ.

The event was a huge success and everyone had a fun, safe time.

DJ Rob played music all night and was AMAZING. Rob donated his time to the dance and we are so grateful to him for making the evening so much fun.

If you need a DJ for a party, wedding, or any other special event, definitely give Rob a call. We highly recommend him.

The Ferndale Boys & Girls Club June “Youth of the Month” is 6th grader Justine Garrison.

Justine has been a Club member for over a year and participates in Torch Club and Smart Girls. Justine’s favorite Club activities are: playing in the gym, Art Club, and Club Tech.

Outside of the BGC, Justine plays the violin, sings in her school talent show, and plays soccer. She is a very busy girl!

Justine loves to play sports, hang out with friends, and read.

Justine explains that her youth group leader as had the biggest influence in her life, besides her parents.

Staff nominated Justine as Youth of the Month because she has a great attitude and is a positive influence on many other Club members. She is always fun to be around!

The Ferndale Boys & Girls Club Auction is just a couple weeks away on Saturday June 25!

Unfortunately,that means that the Club will be closed part of the week before for set up. The Club will be CLOSED June 22, 23, and 24.

We will open from 10a-5p for our summer hours on Monday June 27th. For more information about summer, click here.

Summer and Fall Sports

You are right, it is still rainy and we can barely finish spring baseball because of the weather BUT it is time to start thinking about summer baseball! The weather will be warmer and the fields are a great place to be on sunny weekday evenings. Sign ups for summer ball are currently happening at the Club between 12p-5p. Cost is $55 (plus current 2010/2011 $30 membership). Come in now!

Although football and volleyball leagues don't begin until mid-August, sign ups are happening soon! Tackle football sign ups are on Saturday June 4 from 10-2p. Flag Football and Volleyball sign ups begin Monday June 6 and continue throughout the month. Tackle sign ups will also continue after the 4th until teams are full.

Bells Baseball and Club Reminder

Friday, June 10^th is Youth Baseball and Softball Day at Joe Martin Stadium.

Gates open to Youth League players and coaches at 5:30 p.m., with a “chalk talk” led by Bells players starting at 5:35. Former Mariner Dave Valle will be on hand to throw out the first pitch and interact with kids. Plus, all Youth League players and coaches in uniform can participate in the pre-game parade of players around the field!

Tickets are offered at a special discount of $4 for bleacher reserved seats!

Tuesday (5/17) - First Day of Teen Open Gym 5:30 - 7p

Wednesday (5/18) - Early Release. Members must be pre-registered to be here during early release times. The cost is $10/member. Regular hours are 3 - 7p and no cost is associated with that time.

Friday (5/20) - CLUB IS CLOSED. The Club will be closed Friday for staff training. There will be no Early Bird and no Afterschool Program. Please plan accordingly.

Teen Open Gym

The Ferndale Boys & Girls Club has a state of the art Teen Center with computers, a sound room, and many multimedia opportunities. It also provides a fun place for teens to go after school. It is a place to hang with friends and participate in various clubs and community activities.

In addition to the Teen Center, the Club also has a brand new gym we would like to open up for teen use only so they have a place to play basketball. We know that many high schoolers look for a place to play and stay in shape. Therefore, the Club would like to offer our building to those teens.

Beginning May 17, the Club gym will be open for teens from 5:30p-7p for Open Gym Basketball every Tuesday and Thursday. Teens must be members of the Club for only $30 and then there are no extra fees for gym use.

We will be having open gym through the summer too.

So come, play basketball and even enjoy the Club before or after playing. We would love to have you here!

Our May “Youth of the Month” is none other than 10 year old - Brayan Garcia.

Brayan has been a Club member for about a year and participates in many Club activities including: Garden Club, Art, and Open Gym. In fact, Brayan explains that he loves playing sports (currently soccer) and planting

outdoors.

The Club Staff really appreciate Brayan’s enthusiasm for various Club events and his attitude. Brayan is always willing to help and is always polite.

We are so proud of Brayan for his success here at the Club and we hope he sticks around for many years to come. Who knows, maybe someday he can help teach other Club members about growing things at the garden!

New Club clubs

Every quarter the Boys & Girls Club has staff run mini-groups focusing on special age groups and life skills. Beginning in April we will be offering:

Good Fellas - A male teen program lead by Greg. Teens will talk about "boy stuff" and have the opportunity to hear about different professions from community leaders.

Art Basics - Jessica will be leading any aged Club member in learning about art supplies. Members will learn exactly how to use art supplies and create masterpieces.

Running Club - Tuesdays and Thursdays are Running Club. Whether in the gym or outside, kids have the opportunity to get out their energy while running. After a certain amount of mileage, members will get a pizza party.

Gardening Club - This club has been especially popular with Club members for the past 3 years now. Participants learn about gardening while getting first hand experience getting dirty in the Ferndale Community Garden. Summer food will be used for snacks and donated to the Ferndale Food Bank.

Dance Club - Children love to move and Dance club gives kids the chance to learn new dance moves while also doing free movement.

Cavity Free Zone - Every Wednesday, members learn the importance of healthy dental habits.

Kelso's Choice - Club members ages 8 - 10 years old learn about making good choices and peer mediation. This is a great opportunity to make members feel involved and in control of their own actions.

Smart Girls - This is a female teen program lead by Courtney. Girls discuss girly things and what it means to be a successful, positive woman.

Keystone - Every Friday, teens have a chance to get together and talk about how they want their teen program to run at the Boys & Girls Club. With elected officials, teens discuss how they want the teen room to operate and what they can do to help in the local community.

Career Launch - This is another teen program that focuses on helping teens learn how to be successful and they steps they need to take to seek employment for their futures.

April's Youth of the Month: Javon Smith.

Javon was chosen as April’s Youth of the Month because he displays positive behavior and is always willing to include other members in games. Staff appreciate Javon for his outgoing personality and his humor.

Javon has been a Club member since the beginning of the 2010/2011 school year. He is an active participant in the Club and attends Torch Club, Good Fellas, and Gardening Club. His favorite Club games include sproutball, medicball, and dodgeball. So, we can assume it is safe to say Javon loves the

gym and being active!

Another thing Javon loves to do is dance. Give the kid a beat and he is ready to move. This makes Javon great at Just Dance for the Wii.

Although Javon is an active kid, he also likes reading. His favorite book is Rabbit Hill by Robert Lawson.

Everyone enjoys Javon, staff love his enthusiasm to help and the younger members look up to him. Javon has a great attitude and we are lucky to have him as a part of the Ferndale Boys & Girls Club.

State Youth of the Year Competition

Earlier this year, Ferndale Club member Travis White was named Whatcom County's Youth of the Year. On March 23rd and 24th we went to the Washington State Youth of the Year competition and had a great time. The event started off in the Couches Lounge at Qwest Field where Travis and the other youth gave their speeches to the pannel of judges, then they had a series of one on one interviews with the judges. After the interviews we went on a behind the scenes tour of the stadium, we got to see everything but the locker rooms. Then came the dinner, MC'd by last years Youth of the Year, Bellingham's Vang Le. All the Youth gave their speeches again at dinner, they all did very well infront of an audience of over 200 people. After dinner it was on to Olympia, Travis and the other candidates rode in style on board the "party bus." What happened on the party bus is a mystery, but the rumor is Travis has some pretty sweet dance moves. The next morning we got up bright and early to have breakfast at the Governor's Mansion. After we sang her Happy Birthday, Governor Christine Gregoire announced the winner. Congratulations Travis on the excellent job you did representing Whatcom County, and congratulations to Kainen Bell of the Boys & Girls Clubs of South Puget Sound on his win, we know he'll do well representing all the great kids of Washington at the regional competition in July.

New Program Director

I am pleased to announce Emily Marrs has joined the Ferndale team as our Program Director. Emily began her Club career in Ferndale 7 years ago as an intern, since then she has been the Ferndale Interim Athletic Director, Athletic Coordinator at the Bellingham Club and filled in as the Ferndale Program Director last spring. Emily lives in Ferndale and is excited to be working here as well. Please join me in welcoming her, she can be reached at Emarrs@whatcomclubs.org Emily’s first day was yesterday, March 16.

March YOM-Korina

Korina is new to Ferndale and the Boys & Girls Club but she is already a well liked, special member of our Club. Korina is 17 years old and attends Ferndale High School.
Korina always has a smile on her face and is happy to help staff. Most days Korina, a member of snack committee, assists with the serving and preparation of snack. Korina enjoys using the Club computers to write letters and work on homework and she is a great carpet ball player.
Korina has three younger brothers who also attend the Boys & Girls Club. She is a great big sister and an excellent role model for all Club members.

Imant has been a Boys & Girls Club member since the Summer of 2009. She is an active participant in Garden Club and Power Hour.
Imant was nominated as Youth of the Month for always being cheerful, being a good sport and participating in many different Club activities. In addition to Garden Club Imant also enjoys art and using the Learning Center computers.
Imant’s favorite series of books are the Bones graphic novels by Jeff Smith. She loves school and playing in the outdoors.

New Programs Begin in January

Starting this month we will be offering new programs for youth including the following:
Kelso's Choice- for elementary school kids, a program teaching youth how to problem solve, build healthy friendships and be leaders. This program meets each Monday with Tyler.
Goodfella's- for teen boys, a group focused on making smart decisions, good habits & healthy choices. This group will meet each Wednesday in the teen center at 3:15 with Greg.
Cavity Free Zone- for our youngest members this program is focused on oral hygiene & having fun! CFZ will meet each Wednesday at 5:15 with Shawna.
Career Launch- for our teen members to learn about career opportunities, finding a job, attending college and preparing for the world post-high school. Career Launch will meet each Thursday at 5:30 in the teen center with Megan.
SMART Girls- for girls ages 8-12, a program focused on health, fitness, self-esteem enhancement, healthy friendships and more. SMART Girls will meet each Friday at 4:15 with Chelsea & Courtney in the art room.

Garden Club, Torch Club and Keystone continue to meet on their regular days.

Early Release Days in 2011

With 12 early release days for the 2011 school year the Boys & Girls Club has made the tough decision to make changes to accommodate programming and staffing these early release days. Starting January 12, 2011 there will be a $10 charge to attend the Club on early release days. Space will be limited to the first 75 youth to sign up.
While we understand that this fee may create financial hardship for some families it is a necessary step for the Club to take in order to keep our doors open with adequate staffing for the safety and integrity of the program. Included in this fee is transportation to the Club for youth attending Eagleridge & Mt. View.
A discounted fee of $80 is available for families who chose to pay the fees in one lump sum in advance.

To attend the Club on early release days youth must be signed up in advance and the fee must be paid.

YOM Dec- KYLE

Kyle is 13 and in 8th he is our Club's December 2010 Youth of the Month. Kyle was nominated as YOM by staff because of his work as Snack Committee Chair, his willingness to help out whenever needed and for being a great role model.
Kyle has been coming to the Boys & Girls Club for 6 years. He is a member of Keystone Club. Kyle can often been found in the recording studio, using the Teen Tech Lab, shooting hoops in the gym or playing on the Club’s x-box.
Kyle’s favorite book is Pendragon by DJ Machale. When he’s not at the Club Kyle likes swimming, reading and video games. Kyle has no pets but he does have two brothers including a twin!

Starting Thursday all elementary students will be out of school early (1pm) for parent/teacher conferences. The Boys & Girls Club of Ferndale is open from 1pm-6pm those days. We will close at 5pm Wednesday 11/24 in preparation for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Adriana has been a Boys & Girls Club member for just over one month. Adriana comes to the Club daily with her younger sister. At the Boys & Girls Adriana is a member of Gardening Club. She also participates in the Digital Arts Festival, Power Hour and most arts & crafts projects. Adriana was nominated as youth of the month by Club Staff because she is always conscience of what she is doing and saying. Adriana always volunteers to help clean up or get things ready and to stay after an activity and be a help to staff. Adriana also sets a wonderful example for other members, always following directions from staff, and watching out for her younger sibling and other members to help them in any way she can.
Adriana likes to play soccer, read fantasy books and play monopoly.

FSD Calendar Changes Impacts Club Schedule

The Ferndale School Board recently adopted a revised calendar for 2010-11.Significant changes have been made including the addition of 10 early release days. A one page overview is available here. In an effort to help families the Boys & Girls Club will change our annual calendar to accommodate the additional half days and closures as much as possible. Unfortunately we will not be open early for the early release day on Wednesday November 17. Effective immediately the Boys & Girls Club will close at 6pm on all early release days. Gardening Club Visits Bellewood Acres

The gardening club recently took a field trip to Bellewood Acres Apple Farm, where we enjoyed a beautiful fall day in the orchards learning all about apples, farming and perhaps best of all sampling different varieties of apples.

With schools still closed for the strike, we at the Club, have been making the best of it and enjoying the last days of summer. Yesterday we took a walk, toured the cabins at Pioneer Park, made some cool art projects, had a great game of Apples to Apples and played some new gym games.
Today we will play a game of kickball, take a walk and take some pictures of our neighborhood, get started on a digital arts project and much more.
We are open from 7am-7pm so stop by and join us for fun!

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Whatcom County Ferndale Branch will provide transportation after school from Mt. View, Eagleridge, & Skyline Elementary Schools to the Club.

This program is open to all Club members with a 2010/2011 “BLUE” membership card.
The cost of the van/bus is as follows:
$110.00 for the whole school year (September-June) when payment is made in one lump sum.
OR
$20 per month when payment is made once per month.

Payment is due by the 5th of each month. If payment is not received your child will not be able to ride the van to the Club after school.
The van is operated by trained, professional Club staff. As always your child’s safety is our primary concern.

Rules & Regulations
The van does not operate on early release days
Please call if your child will not need transportation to the Club.
There is no transportation home from the Club or back to school
All youth must be picked up from the Club no later then 6:30pm
Payment must be received by the 5th of each month
Failure to submit payment will result in removal from the transportation program
Your child’s behavior dictates their eligibility to participate in the transportation program. All Club rules must be followed when riding the van and inside the Clubhouse. Your child may be removed from the program at any time if his or her behavior becomes a problem while waiting for the bus, at the Club or in the bus during transport. This means you may be called to pick up your child from the Club immediately.

This week we are trying to move everything out of the our current building and into the new one! So far everything is going all right. It is a lot of work but we are managing and are good and tired at the end of the day.
With that said, you can imagine how "back and forth" we are between locations. It may be hard to locate us over the next week. However, I can give you some important dates coming up and where you can find us at certain times.

This is the last week the Club will be open before June 28! We will be open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday this week and then closed until June 28. We have some fun stuff planned to leave the kids feeling excited about our new building.

Summer Information!

Because we will be mainly closed for the month of June, it is time to start thinking about our summer program!

Summer programing will run June 28 - Aug 18 with Field Trips Tuesday - Friday for a low additional cost to members. Drop In will be 10a - 5p and Early Bird will be 7a - 10a ($55/week for the Early Bird).

Please come in to the Club at 2290 Main St to pick up a flyer, view our field trips, and/or sign up for those field trips. Sign ups will continue at our current location until May 27.

Youth of the Month: April - Francesca!

Francesca is a 6 (soon to be 7) year old member here at the Ferndale BGC. She has been coming to the Club for 2 years and her favorite activity here is carpetball.

Francesca is a very kind and outgoing young lady. She will participate in almost any activity the Club offers from art projects to dodgeball . Although she may be small, she is quite a competitor.

Francesca’s favorite books are the Junie B Jones series. She is a great reader and will always go to Power Hour (the Club’s homework program) when there is work to do.
Staff love having Francesca around and seeing her great smile!

Club Closed for a Month

March YOM - Zack Dowers!

Zack is 8 years old and has been a Club member for 3 years. At the Club Zack participates in Running Club and Gardening Club. Zack’s favorite games here at the Club are carpetball, basketball and foosball. Outside of the Club, Zack plays on a soccer team.

Zack’s favorite books are Dr. Suess books, he especially likes Green Eggs and Ham.

Zack’s biggest news recently is that his grandma got him a hamster. He loves his hamster and he enjoys the responsibility of taking care of it.

Zack is a great Club member and we are lucky to have someone as fun and involved in activities as him.

Program Spotlight: Kelso's Choice

Kelso's Choice: Conflict Management for Children is a powerful program to help build a vital life skill for young people in today's world. The program philosophy believes that each child is smart and strong enough to resolve conflict. Here at the Ferndale Boys & Girls Club, we are providing members with the training and skills to be their own "conflict managers". Our Early Bird program has been learning this concept and we have seen positive changes and behaviors from our members. Because of the success, Jr. Staff and Torch Club members will be trained in Kelso's Choice March 15-19 at 4pm here at the Ferndale Club. These members will be trained so they can teach the concept to our other Club members in March. We are excited to teach this method to our members and believe it will empower young people with the ability to determine their own behavior and appropriate problem ownership. Youth of the Month: Brylee Willet

Brylee is 7 years old and has been coming to the Ferndale Boys & Girls Club for almost a year. At the Club Brylee participates in Running Club, Dance Club, Gardening Club & ImageMakers. Brylee also plays soccer in the fall. When she is just hanging out at the Club Brylee likes to play carpet ball or bumper pool abd do art projects with Staff Member TJ. Brylee has been nominated as youth of the month by Club staff for demonstrating inclusiveness, patience and acceptance. Also because she makes good decisions and participates in a variety of activities. Congratulations on being named YOM Brylee!

Update: New Clubhouse

Construction is well underway at the new Ferndale Clubhouse. The roof is on but building is running slightly behind schedule. We will begin the moving process in late May. Our last day at our current location will be Wednesday May 26th. To facilitate the move, grand opening and auction the Boys & Girls Club will be closed for all before and after school programs from May 27th-June 27th. Ty is 17 years old and has been coming to the Boys & Girls Club of Ferndale for 6 years. Ty was nominated by Club Staff as Youth of the Year because he has a great attitude, is willing to help younger members, is a great role model and always has a smile on his face. Ty is a great helper for Staff too, he will help teach new members Club rules for games like Sprout Ball and he helps out when he sees that someone needs a hand. Ty's favorite activities at the Club are gym games, teen nights & teen overnighters. Ty is an excellent athlete and is a great kickball team captain. Ty lives in Ferndale with his Mom, Dad, Brother & Sister. Ty's family is very important to him. At school Ty's favorite classes are world history, mythology & PE. Congratulations on being named YOY Ty, the Club is proud of you!

Program Spotlight- Claymation

The Ferndale Boys & Girls Club is currently offering a clay animation program for youth. During the program youth have the opportunity to create storyboards, use modeling clay, and cameras to create a short animated film. This program is currently being run by staff member Andrea Traner during the Early Bird morning program and on non-school days. The program will be run through the month of February. Program Spotlight-Cavity Free Zone

More than 50 percent of 5-9 year old children have at least one cavity or filling, and that number increases to 7 percent among 17 year-olds. To help combat this major problem we will be holding The Crest Cavity-Free Zone program. This program is designed to improve member's self-esteem; develop sound, lifelong dental habits, teach the best practices for brushing and maintaining healthy teeth. Cavity-Free Zone is geared towards members 5-9 years old and meets on Monday's with Staff member Kale.

YOM January-Melodi

Melodi has been named Youth of the Month for January. Melodi was nominated as YOM by club staff for her great attitude, being helpful to other members and staff alike and participating in lots of activities. Melodi is a seventh grader at Vista Middle School, she has been coming to the Boys & Girls Club for 8 months, ever since moving to Ferndale. Originally from Tehran, Iran Melodi and her family recently immigrated to the United States. In their free time both Melodi and her parents have been busy learning English. Melodi has a younger sister who attends the Boys & Girls Club as well. At the Club Melodi likes to play Apples to Apples. prison bombardment and medic ball. She also regularly participates in teen nights. Melodi's favorite book is Seven Secrets to Success by Richard Webster. Congratulations on being YOM Melodi!

Fine Arts Exhibit

Beginning today & running through Sunday January 10th the Boys & Girls Clubs of Whatcom County is exhibiting members’ artwork at Boundary Bay Brewery & Bistro. We have a great display of artwork from the Bellingham, Blaine, Ferndale & Lynden Clubs and I encourage everyone to stop by Boundary Bay in the next week to check it out & thank Boundary Bay for their continued support of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Whatcom County.
The exhibit is part of BGCA’s Fine Arts Exhibit and winning pieces here will be shipped to California for regional judging later this month.

Bailey has been a member at the Boys & Girls Club for two years, she comes everyday after school and sometimes before school too. Bailey is eight years old and in third grade. At the Club Bailey is a member of Dance Club, Gardening Club and regularly participates in tournaments. Some of Bailey’s favorite Boys & Girls Club activities are foosball, bumper pool & pool. Bailey was nominated as youth of the month because she has a great attitude and participates in lots of Club activities. Bailey is very generous and doesn’t hold grudges, she always has a smile on her face and is friends with everyone.
Bailey likes to read the Goosebumps series by RL Stein and also plays basketball through the Club.
Bailey has an older brother and sister who are great role models and “are really nice.”

Inclement Weather Policy

With winter weather fast approaching and threats of an H1N1 pandemic please be aware of the Boys & Girls Club policy for Non-Scheduled School Closures.
When the Ferndale School District is closed due to inclement weather or health concerns the Boys & Girls Club is also closed.
When schools are on a delayed scheduled due to inclement weather the Boys & Girls Club Early Bird Program operates on the same delay. For example if schools open 1 hour late the Early Bird program opens 1 hour late (8am) as well. When schools close early due to inclement weather or other safety hazards the Boys & Girls Club is closed after school and there is no after school transportation program.

Early Release- Confrences

During early release for elementary schools parent/teacher confrences the Boys & Girls Club is open from 1pm-6:30pm. Unfortunately we are not able to offer after school transportation on early release days.
On Wednesday November 25 the Boys & Girls Club closes at 5pm.
The Club is closed Thrusday 11/26 and Friday 11/27 for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Youth of the Month: AJ

AJ is 10 years old and in 4th grade. AJ has been a Club member for two years.
At the Club AJ enjoys playing sprout ball, bumper pool and hanging out with Club staff. When he’s not at the Boys & Girls Club AJ likes to fish, play baseball, soccer, basketball & football. AJ’s Grandpa is his biggest role model. AJ enjoys reading Sports Illustrated magazine and coming to The Boys & Girls Club.
AJ was nominated as Youth of the Month because he is caring, polite, considerate, a great big brother and always has a smile on his face!
